Melbourne: Caroline Wozniacki wins Australian Open title by beating world number one Simona Halep Saturday in a thrilling final played in brutal heat.

The second seed Dane won 7-6 (7-2) 3-6 6-4 to replace her Romanian opponent as the new world number 1 and clinch her first grand slam title in 43 attempts being a runner-up twice at the US Open. The defeat for Halep denied her first major who also ended runner-up in two French Opens before.

Both players reached final saving match points along the way and provided a nail-biting contest in blistering heat and humidity.

Wozniacki took the opener in a tie-break and Halep produced very aggressive tennis in the second set, despite requiring treatment to recover from exhaustion, to claim the second set.

The final set proved to be a roller coaster with Wozniacki breaking twice early in the set but Halep breaking back both the times and putting on another break of serve to lead 4-3.

Both players looked extremely tired and Wozniacki went through a knee injury treatment before the game resumed.

But Wozniacki proved to be solid in the most important moments and her impeccable defense allowed her win breathtaking rallies and the final three games of the set.

"I dreamt of this moment for so many years, and to be here today is a dream come true," said 27 year old Wozniacki.

She also praised her dad and coach for his support throughout her life and career.

"Last but not least, I want to thank my dad who has been there since I was seven," said Wozniacki.

Halep admired her opponent and hoped to reach this stage again.

"Of course I am sad but Caroline was better than me," said Halep.

"I fight and have many years to go, so hopefully will face another challenge like today."
