Bayern Munich: Manager Carlo Ancelotti Sacked

Bayern Munich has sacked manager Carlo Ancelotti after a 3-0 Champions League defeat by Paris St-Germain.

Ancelotti had replaced Pep Guardiola last year and guided the club to the Bundesliga title, 5th consecutive by the club.

But the Italian failed to meet the expectations as the club only reached the quarter-finals of the last Champions League and are currently third in the German league.

"The performance of our team since the start of the season did not meet the expectations we put to them," said Bayern's chief executive Karl-Heinz Rummenigge.

"I would like to thank Carlo for his cooperation. Carlo is my friend and will remain my friend, but we had to make a professional decision. The game in Paris clearly showed that we had to draw consequences."

The decision came as a bit of surprise as the former Chelsea, PSG, Real Madrid and AC Milan boss has won the Champions League most number of times, 3, along with former Liverpool boss Bob Paisley.

Ancelotti claimed the European glory with Milan in 2003 and 2007, and with Madrid in 2014.

The German giants will now temporarily be managed by assistant boss Willy Sagnol.
