''' FACEBOOK & FUMIGATE '''

THE MURDER AND A VIDEO SPARKED outrage across the world and renewed scrutiny of the growing number of grisly videos being posted on social media.

Washington : Facebook said that it is hiring an extra 3,000 staff to root out violent content as the social media giant faces scrutiny for a series of killing and suicides broadcast on its platform.

''If we're going to build a safe community, we need to respond quickly,'' chief executive Mark Zuckerberg said on his Facebook page :

'' We're working to make these  videos  easy to report so we can  take the right action sooner  -whether that's responding quickly when someone needs help or taking a post down.

The  3,000 new recruits added over the coming years, will increase by two-thirds the size of  Facebook's  community operations team, which recently numbers 4,500.

Zuckerberg's announcement came after a week after  20-year old Thai man broadcast live video on the world's most popular social media platform, showing him killing his baby daughter before committing suicide.

The previous week, a  U.S. man dubbed the  ''Facebook Killer''  fatally shot himself after three days of frantic nationwide manhunt.

The murder and the video sparked outrage across the world and renewed scrutiny of the growing number of grisly videos being posted on social video.

Facebook removed the footage hours after the attack.    Zuckerberg acknowledged that the world's largest social network had a role to play in stemming the worrisome trend.

''We've seen people hurting themselves and others on Facebook  -either live or in video posted later,'' Zuckerberg said. ''It's heartbreaking, and I've been reflecting on how we can do better for our community.''

The additional reviewers will  ''help us get better at removing things we don't allow on Facebook like  hate speech and child exploitation,'' he said.

''And we'll keep working with local community groups and law enforcement who are in the best position to help someone if they need it   -either because they are about to harm themselves, or because they are in danger from someone else.''

And back in  *Proud Pakistan*, the core concern, The Power of Information comes under some very powerful review:

''A Fish can't see the water it swims in.'' This is a very powerful phrase used by the proponents of  Social Constructvism  Theory.

The basic agenda is that the reality around us is built by the influential forces that handle circulation of facts and information in a society.

This is precisely the reason why restrictions upon media are the top priorities of an authoritarian regime.

Wayne C. William writes in  The World since 1945   that other than the issues of political representation and proximity,  the ultimate reason for the East Pakistan debacle was a natural disaster-

When a powerful cyclone in 1970 hit the area leaving  200,000 lifeless and more than a million displaced. Immediately on its heels came the man-made disaster of subjugation of the political leaders by the military dictatorship.

This line of thought opens entirely new ways of justifying the rebellion that followed later. India then played the devil's advocate and used the 1,000 miles of territory between the two wings to block all links between them.

INFORMATION, indeed does wonders. It feeds the thought process just like music nourishes the soul.

Confining media and limiting information sources hinders the information of opinions and makes the public believe exactly what others want.

They use language and technological barriers to maintain the dark one-sided perspective. Denying people avenues to criticize is an abuse of human rights.

Isn't it time we learnt lessons from the past follies to ensure a bright future. Thank You!  Sobia Mansoor.
