O'' WORLD STUDENTS '''

STRESS - ANXIETY - DEPRESSION have overtaken all physical illnesses as the most common cause of long term absence from schools, colleges and universities and work.

According to a one government survey, 2008, 442,000 of the UK workforce believed they were so stressed that it was making them ill. But there plenty of easy ways to combat stress: Just find ones that suit you the best.

1. GET FRUITY

A University of Alabama trial fed rats 200mg of vitamin C twice a day and found that it almost stopped the secretion of stress hormones in the toothy little blighters. An OJ a day might just keep the worries at bay.

2. FANTACISE THIS

Craig Mardus PhD author of ''How To Stop Worry In One Second'' advises sufferers to imagine their most uninhibited fantasy. Stress causes adrenaline to be released, making relaxation unlikely, so instead, turn that adrenaline into excitement. It helps stress become more manageable and pleasurable.

3. GET SOME BALLS

A tube of tennis balls maybe the best stress-busting investment you could ever make. According to stressfocus.com, stress balls can tackle the short-term effects of stress. But tennis balls can provide a cheap alternative.

Drill a hole in the tennis ball and squeeze it at times of stress. Feel the tension up build in your hand, arm and body. Then release, and feel the relaxation in your muscles. And that's not all

According to Ed Moore, a massage therapist who has worked with the American Olympic Cycling team, tennis balls give a great massage. Drop two tennis balls into a sock, and tie off the end. Now place on the small of your back, either side of the spine.

Rock your hips side -to- side and move the ball a few inches up your back every two minutes. Hey presto - a superb massage from two furry balls in a sock.

4. LISTEN WHILE YOU WORK

Listening to the blandest possible Music at work lowers stress levels among employees. according to a Wilkes University study. Just think how relaxed lift attendants must be.

5. SLEEP

According to a recent study by NOP, two-thirds of students/ people have trouble sleeping. Lack of sleep is both a symptom and a cause of stress. Tip the odd's in your favour with any of the following:

Have a warm milky drink. Place a couple of drops of Lavender essence on your pillow. Go to bed at the same time every night, and keep your room cool and dark. Limit your intake of caffeine and alcohol drinks. Don't eat too close to your bedtime. Have a bath or listen to a Relaxation tape.

6. TALK SLOWLY

It might sound bonkers but according to medicinenet.com, if you practice speaking slowly, ''you'll find that you think more clearly and react more reasonably to stressful situations. You'll also appear less anxious and more in control of any situation.''

7. TAKE A ''FIREBREAK''

Dr Henderson suggests that you build three 20-40 minute firebreaks in your day, where nothing is scheduled at all.

''These may not make your boss more friendly, but they will allow control in a busy day that would otherwise beat you.''

8. CLIMB A CLIFF

We know it sounds counter-intuitive -why do something stressful to combat stress? But rock climbing occupies both mind and body, leaving no room for everyday worries and their physical symptoms.

The World Renowned Sierra Tucson Center now boasts a Climbing Wall as part of its Anxiety Disorder Treatment Programme.

If Rock Climbing isn't your thing, do some gardening, sand down and repaint a cupboard. Or find a hobby that will keep both mind and body busy.

9. CARB UP!

Complex carbohydrates help boost the body's production of serotonin, the brain's feelgood chemical.

According to wellscotland.info, ''the carbs present in one baked potato are enough to relive the anxiety of a stressful day''. Alternative feelgoodcarbs include bread, pasta and rice.

10.GO GINGER

According to stresspreventionguide.com, ''this simple little herb can be a great benefit in relieving stress''. Organicfacts. net agrees: ''Ginger oil, being an essential oil, is stimulating, and therefore relieves:

.-depression.
.-stress
