Nearly 36 Million People Live In Modern Slavery

According to Walk Free’s Global Slavery Index, nearly 36 million people are living in modern slavery across the globe – that’s 0.5 percent of the world’s population. In this case, slaves are defined as people forced into labor, debt bondage, trafficking, sexual exploitation for money and forced or servile marriage.

Nearly 17.5 million people are living in slavery in South Asia, making it the world’s worst region. 14.3 million of those alone can be found in India. East Asia & Pacific comes next with just over 6 million while there are an estimated 5.6 million slaves in Sub-Saharan Africa.
