Hundreds Rally to Support SC State University

Orangeburg, SC (WLTX) -- Supporters of South Carolina State University took to the streets of Orangeburg Saturday morning. Hundreds marched to a rally at the school to show support for the troubled University. They are hoping to send a message across the state that while some may see them as down, they are not out.

"Not only do we have the support of our students, we have the support of our Orangeburg," said student Brianna Simmons.

"The enthusiasm is just overwhelming. Everyone is smiling and upbeat and we have a great, great vibe going on here at South Carolina State University. Everybody's happy," said University President Thomas Elzey.

Students and graduates joined with faculty, staff and community members and leaders to support the school that has seen its share of troubles.

"You're gonna have bad press for any given situation, any institution, at some time or another. We're going through that challenge or crisis right now, but if we all unite and support our university we will survive it," said Evia Thomas, a SC State graduate.

The school has struggled with debt, drops in enrollment, changing leadership and accreditation concerns, but students say those issues do not define them or the school.
