Clashes in Chile as thousands of students protest lagging education reform

SANTIAGO, Chile –  Student protesters have fled a tear gas truck and police water cannons during a march through the Chilean capital, but no injuries or arrests have been reported.

Thousands of young people unhappy with the pace of education reform under President Michelle Bachelet participated peacefully in Thursday's march.

But dozens of unidentified people wearing masks interrupted the march, damaging traffic lights and signs, starting fires in trash containers and throwing sticks and stones at police.

Protest organizers say about 80,000 people took part in the march. Interior Undersecretary Mahmud estimates the number of participants at 25,000.

The demonstration created major traffic jams around Santiago's center.

It was the third major march of the year in the South American country.
