Nigeria: LASU returning students in tuition fee row

Lagos, June 25: The students reiterate their demand to reduce the fee to N46,500 for returning students, while fresh students should pay N65, 500.

The Governing Council announced a new fee on June 20 after the reduction on June 11.

The Lagos State University, LASU, Students Union refused to accept the new tuition fee announced by the university's Governing Council.

The union's President, Nurudeen Yusuf, said that only 900 newly admitted students for the 2013/2014 academic session had paid the fee and if the returning students accepted the new fees, the total number of students who would have paid would be more than 2,000.

"We are about 8,000 students in LASU; the 2013/2014 newly admitted students are 1,014, which means only 900 could afford to pay before their matriculation.

"If the management claims that over 900 students have paid, it is the newly admitted students and definitely not the returning students," he said.

The tuition fee was increased from N25,000 in 2011 to N198,000 for humanities and education, while medical students paid N350,000.

The union leader said that the students would persist their stand.
