England On Brink Of World Cup Elimination After 2-1 Loss To Uruguay

The Three Lions may leave Brazil without doing much roaring.

England is on the brink of elimination from the 2014 World Cup after losses in its first two group-stage games. Facing a virtual must-win situation after its 2-1 defeat to Italy in its opener, England lost to Uruguay by that same score in a Group D clash at Itaquerao Stadium in Sao Paulo on Thursday. Striker Luis Suarez scored both goals for Uruguay, with the decisive strike coming in the 85th minute.

Suarez's late goal came after a milestone equalizer from Wayne Rooney. England's No. 10, Rooney notched his first career World Cup goal with a tap in from close range after a cross from Glen Johnson in the 75th minute.

That long-awaited score cancelled out Suarez's opening tally. With England dominating possession in the first half, Suarez got his head to a cross from Edinson Cavani on the counterattack in the 39th minute.

The defeat drops England to the bottom of Group D and means it no longer control its own fate. A win or draw for Costa Rica against Italy on Friday will eliminate England from contention even before its final group-stage game.
