Tens of thousands take to streets in first student protest of the year

Organizers say 100,000 high school and university students in Santiago alone march on presidential palace to demand a stake in sweeping education reforms.

May08, 2014: Demonstrators poured into the streets Thursday as tens of thousands of students and sympathizers, including several parliamentarians, rallied for the first march of 2014 and the new administration of President Michelle Bachelet.

Students organizations claimed 100,000 marched in the capital, with similar demonstrations held around the country. Carabineros — Chile’s uniformed police — put the figure for Santiago at 40,000.
