Hunter kills rare wolf not seen for 89 years after mistaking it for a coyote

Although grey wolves are protected under state code in Iowa, no action has been taken against the the red-faced man because he fully cooperated with authorities.

rare wolf species that hadn't been seen for 89 years was shot dead after a blundering hunter mistook it for a coyote.
The embarrassing incident happened in Iowa when the hunter, who has not been named, mistook the grey wolf for the common pest which is wiping out wild deer and is legal to shoot.
Grey wolves have not been seen in the US state since 1925 and are protected under state code.
They are around 26-27 inches tall, can grow up to 6ft tall and feast on deer, elk, rabbits and other wild mammals.
No action has been taken against the man, who fully cooperated with authorities, after DNA testing confirmed the true identity of his prey.
US biologist Vince Evelsizer said: “I was surprised but not that surprised. Large animals can cover great distances, and state lines mean nothing to them."
Conservation officer Scott Kinseth said the hunter went out of his way to cooperate with authorities and he had no idea he was doing anything wrong.
He added: "The message going forward is they are protected animals. We know they are here.
"Make sure of your target. If in doubt, don’t shoot.”
