Strike called for tomorrow at 2 DU faculties

Student bodies at Dhaka University (DU), yesterday declared a strike at the arts and social sciences faculties tomorrow protesting the “high course fee” at the film and television department.

At a press conference in Madhu's Canteen, they said the department's four-year course costs Tk 1.37 lakh which was unacceptable for a public university, not affordable and designed to commercialise DU.
DU unit Bangladesh Students' Front President Rashed Shahrier said, “We handed over our demands to the department's chairman and submitted a memorandum to the vice-chancellor but to no avail.”
The department's Chairman Prof AJM Shafiul Alam Bhuiyan said the department has more practical courses than other departments and so the fee is higher.
On affordability, he said the course which can accommodate 30 students has already registered 28 students.
Meanwhile at the same venue, the jote's Central Committee demanded immediate cancellation of evening master's programmes and fee hikes in public universities.
Bangladesh Chhatra League activists who on February 2 attacked the Rajshahi University students protesting the programmes and hikes should be brought to book, said Bangladesh Chhatra Moitri Convener Foysal Faruqe Ovik.
