Rajshahi University students on strike

Dhaka, Bangladesh: They demand lowering tuition fees and withdrawal of all evening courses

A daylong strike was underway at Rajshahi University on Saturday called by students protesting the hike in tuition fees and the evening courses at the institution.

Students had boycotted all classes and examinations in the morning. They were gathering at campus premises to participate in demonstrations.

The students had locked up all the academic buildings at campus in the morning. They are expected to hold a rally near central library premises around 11am.

They began their movement from January 16 for demands of withdrawing evening courses under various faculties and a decrease in the tuition fees.

The students said the evening courses were the primary move for privatisation of the public university.

The students had declared the strike and abstention from classes and examinations on Thursday after authorities paid no heed to their demands.

They said they will go for tougher movements if their demands are not met.
