"THE OPERATING SYSTEM"

OF

PAKISTANI STUDENTS

They are in majority! Let's unwrap them!

Welcome to Zombieland but be mindful of 'A hit of Coke Studio'.Let's listen to Shehzad Roy's song for youth here!

The Pakistani students are a unique asset a rare undiscovered black gold. They hang out in groups and in clumps. Squatting listlessly, they want a text message. They have that far away looks. Something is happening! Something has to happen!

They think and mostly act nationally, race or religion. They understand injustice and casualties. They understand hopelessness. Tortoise-like they couldn't care less! They are human first and foremost.

They can save anything and with bare hands, single handedly and destroy anybody or anything with a sustained flick. They can create law and order and they can destroy law and order. They can smash invaders, enemies, and criminals. And they can turn Pakistan around and launch it to any greatness- without their support, nothing works. Are they fearless?!

They shirk hard work. Prefer to loiter. They kick off good ideas but do everything to choke them. They consider education a pass time and their environment as self-breeding.

They have their own slogans. They have their own wise-cracks.

They can flirt a lamppost. They can skirt a cactus.

Technology lifts them from boredom and gets them restless. They hate books! Rarely would you find a student reading. Their collective thinking is haphazard. Their private thinking a delight.

They hate sciences and mathematics. But they rarely support or wish arts.

Their attention span is short. But their wishes long. Occasionally they stir from their slumber and then flicker out.

Student Angel Mother salutes the Pakistani Students !

My Advice To The Students

By Shahram Khan
And Engineer with a business background.
He has taught in England.

Student hood, the high time in a person’s life which one always wishes to go back to and live it again and again, even with the same mistakes and (miss)-adventures. The decision that you make in that period help you shape your future, not from your parents, your teachers or your friends but you, your own.  No matter what field that you (or in some cases your parents) are going to choose, you will find a Job in that field, eventually. The real aspect is not the Job (surprisingly) but the part where you dedicate yourself in that job to excel and be an expert in that particular field. One needs to have an understanding that nobody will pay a Jack but everybody will be luring with a handsome amount after a King, as they say in Turkish ‘Usta’ (The Master). The trick is to select ONE field and devote your all to it.

Time is cruel and will not wait for you to reach up to it. You need to tame time and make full use of it, whatever time God will bestow you with. It may be 25 years 60 year or 100 make them years count as they will not come back. The essence of professionalism is not hard work but Work Efficient, which is to apply Optimum energy to get Maximum amount of work done in a minimum amount of time.
“The difference between the top performer and the average or mediocre performers is not a great, massive difference. It is just a tiny difference because the top performers do thinks just a tiny bit”, Brain Tracy.

Natalie Wood Death Case Reopened After 30 Years

The death of Natalie Wood is one of the biggest mysteries and has always been one of the greatest tragedies in Hollywood. She was born in San Francisco in 1938, to Russian immigrants Nikolai and Maria. Her real name was "Natalie Gurdin". At the age of 4 she appeared as an extra in her first movie Happy Land. She was nominated three times for an Oscar before she was 25 and starred in many Hollywood classics such as West Side Story and Rebel Without a Cause.

Natalie died at the age of 43 on November 29, 1981. The cause of death was officially ruled as an accidental drowning but there have always been questions surrounding Natalie's death. According to the official story, she and her husband Robert Wagner along with Christopher Walken, who was co-starring with Natalie in the film Brainstorm at the time were on a weekend retreat on Catalina Island when she accidentally fell off of her husband's yacht during the night of partying,

Now 30 years later, the case has been reopened. Apparently the Sheriff's Department was recently contacted by "persons who stated they had additional information about the Natalie Wood Wagner drowning". That is the only official word, but the captain of the ship Dennis Davern, came forward on, claiming he "did lie on a report several years ago," and that he believes Robert Wagner was responsible for Natalie's death.

Pensive: Listening to what they have to say

by Sarah Mahmood

Listening to what the elders have to say is a habit of yore. Instead we argue, even fight in return, trying to prove ourselves right. Not that they can’t be wrong. They can be, but most of the time it is their experience talking. Their outlook on life is a story of the years they have lived. Our life comparatively is still in its early phases, with our understanding practically limited to the narrow view of the world that we have seen. The realization, unfortunately, hits us only once we progress through the years to understand ‘why they said it’.
Understandably, many-a-times, the elder person too handles the situation extremely tactlessly. But that I guess would require another column. The focus right now is what we have to do to correct ourselves. And the first step would probably be to listen patiently to what they have say to say, keeping in mind that they are much ahead of us in years and experience! Happy ‘Pensiving’!

Teenagers More Prone To Self-harm, Says Study

Australian study reveals that teenagers are more likely to harm themselves.

One in every 12 people harm themselves during their teenage years, with the problem solving for 90% before they reach adulthood. The study also shows that girls are more likely to inflict self-harm as compared to boys.

Additional findings show that anxiety, depression and drug and alcohol-addiction are all associated with self-harm, whereas self-cutting and burning are the commonest forms.

Almost 2000 teenagers were repeatedly surveyed over a time-span of 15 years, with the results having important implications for the treatment of mental health issues and suicide prevention amongst adolescents.

Agricultural biotechnology has raised farmers' productivity and significantly reduced pesticide and water use. Drug research has produced cheap and efficient diagnostic tools and treatments for diseases, such as malaria and schistosomiasis, that hit the region hard. And Africa's rivers, wind and sunshine produce abundant cheap and clean energy"

Improving Cyber Security Or Damaging Company's PR

In the cyber world, there are two kind of hackers. Black hat hackers and white hat hackers. First one as name suggests tests and exploits the product to use it for negative purpose. But many security researchers test the product with the intention of finding a bug that black hat hackers, if find, can exploit. Such hackers having intention to report the bug to the company are 'white hat' hackers.

For all products of different companies researchers and 'white hat' hackers inspect the products to check security risks and give company a chance to improve it before the 'black hat' hackers find them.

Under these circumstances, its a debate either the defects should be privately told to the developer or it should be done publicly to force the company the improve the product's security.
A security expert, Bruce Schneier who has written several books on the subject, writes
"If researchers don’t go public, things don’t get fixed, Companies don't see it as a security problem; they see it as a PR problem. And if there's no PR problem, it'll never be a priority."
But telling it publicly also opens the risk that 'black hat' hackers get hold of the bug and exploit it before developers fix it.

Spain: Students Say No To Privatization

Students and teachers are observing a nationwide strike to protest against the privatization of education.

With sharp cuts in education budget and one of the lowest gross domestic products dedicated to education among European countries, Spanish students and teachers are demanding protection for public education.

Striking with the slogan "Education is not sold, defend it!", protesters believe that such steps will create elitism within the sector, making it dependent on 'who can pay and who cannot'.

Why Do People Yawn?

"We can put a man on the moon, but we do not understand what the function of yawning is," says Gary Hack, of the University of Maryland School of Dentistry in Baltimore.

Recently, two scientists of Princeton University have proposed that  yawning causes the walls of the maxillary sinus to expand and contract like a bellows. This causes air to pass through the brain hence lowering its temperature. Located in our cheekbones, the pyramid shaped maxillary are the largest of four pairs of sinus cavities in the human head. They drain into the nose and are present are rudimentary air cells at birth. Growth continues through childhood.

The scientist's proposal is that human brain needs to keep itself cool (just like any electronic machinery needs fan/cooling systems), hence yawing is a way to do so.

"Understanding yawning could be a useful tool for diagnosing certain medical conditions, such as epilepsy and migraines, which are both preceded by excessive yawning", says scientists.

Hacker Alters Students' Result Record

California -- A hacker allegedly broke into students' result records at Santa Clara University altering their grades for the better. The 'break-in' was first noticed by a student who found her result different from what she remembered and informed the university officials accordingly.

Grade security has now been tightened "with a third party consulate to improve security measures,” says Dennis Jacobs, the Santa Clara University Provost. Grades of more than 5000 students are being checked every night, with alterations verified manually.

The hacking occurred between June 2010 and July 2011. No arrests, however, have been made so far.

Occupy Flash: Ridding the world of the Flash plug-in

Flash player comes with a number of intrinsic problems. "It's buggy. It crashes a lot. It requires constant security updates," claims the Occupy Flash movement. Users are being urged to stop using the plug-in by the movement founders, with Adobe only recently cancelling its development for mobile devices claiming that HTML 5 instead is a better alternative.

Aspirin Can Reduce Cancer Risk

In a research carried out at Oxford University, involving a sample of 25,000 patients (mainly from UK) , it has been found out that patients taking Aspirin have a lesser risk than others. It is a common finding now, that aspirin has a strong bleeding effect on Gastrointestinal Tract (see SDT article), but still according to the latest research the weightage of Aspirin's beneficial effects regarding Cancer is higher than the risks it poses towards bleeding.

The gist is that,in a patient, when cells divide (metastasis which goes abnormally multiplicative for cancer patients) there is a risk of faulty DNA in daughter cells. Aspirin enhances the suicidal or repair of these.
This particular study, which was published in Lancet (medical journal especially for Oncology i.e Cancer Related Science) declared that  "The risk for reduction in cancer by aspirin  was 20% over 20 years. For individual cancers the reduction was about 40% for bowel cancer, 30% for lung cancer, 10% for prostate cancer and 60% for esophageal cancer. The reduction in pancreas, stomach & brain cancer were difficult to quantify  because of smaller number of deaths"

The study was led by Peter Rothwell and involved his colleagues as well. They published the results after eight trials.

Polymer notes: A Better Alternative?

Plastic notes are a much better alternative to paper, especially in tropical climates. They are more durable and remain cleaner for a longer time. Additionally, recycling plastic is also not an issue. However, there seem to be some disadvantages associated with the use of polymer notes too. They are slippery and harder to fold and burning them releases pollutants in the air.

  • Polymer notes last more than twice as long as paper notes, and cost less to produce over their lifetime, but they also have some disadvantages
  • They used to be harder to counterfeit than paper notes, though paper notes have now caught up
  • Disadvantages include being unfoldable and more slippery
  • Central bankers are conservative and risk averse - and are waiting to see whether their counterparts in other countries embrace plastic first

Apple is Environment Friendly

Coming in green, black and white colours, Apple designs are environment friendly, says the company. The Official Web page reports : "Apple reports environmental impact comprehensively. We do this by focusing on our products: what happens when we design them, what happens when we make them, and what happens when you take them home and use them."

Apple assessed its carbon footprint for the year 2010 which was announced to be 14.8 million metric tons of green house gas emissions. When the products look and features were improved by Steve Jobs, with renewed lighter, thinner and smaller designs, it was also intentionally made more eco- friendly. For example, The latest developed 21.5-inch iMac is more powerful, has a much larger screen than its predecessor, 15-inch iMac, yet it has 50 percent less material and generates half the emissions".

Reducing the materials reduced packaging demands and hence decreases C02 emissions. This was especially considered by the company. For example in the manufacturing of iPhone 4 it has specially been made 42 percent smaller than the one which was shipped in 2007. This means an 80% increase in the number of iPhone 4 boxes that the shipping pallet can hold. This shall lead to fewer usage of boats and planes for transportation and hence lesser C02 emissions.

The mini Mac of Apple consumes even less than power than a 13-watt CFL light bulb, according to the company itself.

Threat To Frog's Lives!

According to an international study 2008, about one fourth of mammals and one-third of the amphibians species are threatened to have risk of extinction.
159 amphibians have already disappeared.
All these threats are posed because of climate change to frogs and to other amphibians as well specially on tropical Africa, North South America and Andes Mountain areas which accommodate largest number of frogs on the planet earth. Many scientists think that this is highly pessimistic study but amphibians extinction is a very important concern.

Neutrino Repeat Reveals The Same Result

CERN experiment regarding Neutrinos is repeated to get the same result: Neutrinos may travel faster than light.

The experiment was first conducted in September with results that could undermine one of the basic principles of present physics, that of light being the fastest travelling entity present. The results however could have error introduced in them because of the long bunches of particles used, according to critics. The present experiment uses shorter bunches to reveal exactly the same result!

Length of the bunches however is only one among many sources of uncertainty, where each has to be addressed one by one to be sure of the result.
